Brow Products 101

image
Brows are what everyone is obsessed with at the moment. There are so many different products that help you achieve different looks.

No Brush Needed:

  • Tinted Gel: Tinted brow gels can help “tint” the hairs a different color. You can buy a shade darker to make them darker if you have naturally light brows or dyed hair. If you have darker brow hairs you can use a lighter shade to make them less strong. These are great for keeping hairs in place for those with naturally thick brows or people looking for a very natural look.
    • Ex: MAC Tinted Brow Gel / Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel / Tarte Colored Clay Tinted Brow Gel / NYX Tinted Brow Mascara / Bobbi Brown Natural Brow Shaper & Hair Touch Up / Lancôme Brow Groomer
  • Clear Gel: Clear brow gel is great for unruly brows! Use some of this after you fill in your brows to set them in place. Again if you have naturally thick/full brows a clear gel is great for keeping them in place without adding any color.
    • Ex: Anastasia Clear Brow Gel / NYX Control Freak / Milani Brow Shaping Clear Gel / Bobbi Brown Natural Brow Shaper & Hair Touch Up
  • Fiber: Recently brands have been making tinted brow gels that have a fiber in them. When you use these you get natural brows but the fibers help you brows look thicker. This is perfect for very sparse brows. You can use these alone or with other brow products.
    • Ex: Benefit Gimme Brow / L’Oreal Paris Perfection Brow Artist Plumper / ModelCo More brows Eyebrow thickening gel
  • Pencil: A pencil is great for making individual brow hairs. Pencils tend to give a natural look unless used to fill in the brow harshly. These have to be sharpen with pencil sharpener.
    • Ex: Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil / Lancome Le Crayon Poudre / Dior Powder Brow Pencil /Revlon brow Fantasy (also with tinted gel)
  • Retractable Pencil: A retractable pencil tends to be thinner pencil. Again it’s great for a natural brow and making individual hairs.
    • Ex: Anastasia Brow Wiz / Dior Brow Styler Ultra-Fine Precision Brow Pencil / Tarte EmphasEYES For Brows High Definition Eyebrow Pencil / Lancôme Les Sourcils Definis
  • Brow Pen: A brow pen is similar to a brow pencil in theory. A brow pen is great for making little stokes but has a better wear time. Brow pens are also fantastic for making freckles or filling in beauty marks.
    • Ex: Stila All Day Waterproof Brow Color / Milani Brow Tint Pen / Lancôme Longwear Eyebrow Pen Ultra-Precise

Brush Needed:

  • Cream: Creams are a thicker creamy formula.
    • Ex: Giorgio Armani Eye & Brow Maestro / Anastasia Brow Pomade / Too Faced Bullet Proof Brows / It Cosmetics Build-A-Brow
  • Mousse: A mousse is a drier formula.
    • Ex: Tarte Brow Mousse
  • Gel (pot): A gel is a wet/thin formula.
    • Ex: MUFE Aqua Brow / MAC Gel Creme / NYX Eyebrow Gel / Stila Stay All Day Brow Gel
  • Powder: A powder is… a powder product. It can give a natural look or a dramatic look.
    • Ex: Anastasia Brow Powder / Tarte Amazonian Clay Volumizing Brow Powder / Clinique Brow Shaper / Essence How to Make Brows
  • Wax: Waxes can be clear or tinted. They help set your brows or you can use them as a base. Waxes can be thin and runny or stiff depending on the brand.
    • Ex: ELF Brow Kit (powder and wax) / Benefit Brow Zing (powder and wax) / NYX Brow Cake (powder and wax) / Urban Decay Brow Box (powder and wax)
    • No brush for these two are needed: Sephora Universal Brow Freeze / NYX Eye Brow Shaper
All brow products are more of a preference. You can use 1 or many to fill in your brows. I think with all these products you can get natural brows when used lightly or a dramatic brow when you use a dark shade or a lot of product.
Easy to Difficult (in my opinion): brow gel, pencil, waxes, powder, brow pen, and cream/mousse/gel (pot).
